Declutter the Pantry and Discourage Critters

Find out more about Tackle It Tuesday here.
This week I cleaned out my pantry and put all the cereals and snacks in plastic containers and labeled each. I was surprised at how much room was saved on my pantry shelves. I filled two garbage bags with empty boxes. Now the children don’t have to rummage through the pantry – all the snack items are in one box.

Discouraging Critters
OK, I admit the reason I began this project is to protect from mice. We moved into our TN farm home a few months ago. Guess what comes with farm living? In cold weather field mice are inevitable, no matter how clean your home is. We tried everything: Decon, natural repellent (bob cat urine powder), digital pest repellent, etc. I finally bit the bullet and had a pest control company come out. They set out poison and sealed the house.
I was advised the problem we are having probably started when we got our puppies. Leaving dog food in dog dishes will bring the mice in from the fields. So now I feed the puppies a smaller amount so they finish it; then wash and store the dog dishes until the next meal. I haven’t seen any trace of mice in three days. Hopefully that is the end of this battle.

Ah, mice! I’ve only seen one since we moved to FL, but our old house in PA was a wintertime mouse house! I remember picking up my “around the house” jeans one morning and putting them on, only to feel little feet scrathing my legs! I am not a screamer, but I certainly did then, and my hubby came running to the room only to collapse in laughter at the sight of my trying to get out of my britches. Ah, memories!

BAH…mice! I remember when we lived in the middle of nowhere (my parents had to have the corn field harvested before they built our home) and mice were always getting into something. I never saw them, but I knew they were there!

What a great idea! I love the idea of all the snacks being in one lidded box. I just may have to give this a try…great tackle!

Thats a great tackle!
EW. Mice. We lived out in the middle of nowhere on a dairy farm for awhile. We had mice so bad that one year some made a nest inside my son’s mattress. While he was sleeping on it. EWWWWW.

That looks so nice and organized — and mouse-proof! lol We also lived out in the country and had never-ending mouse struggles. The best mouse-repellent ever were our cats! But finding the little “gifts” they left us… gross. It’s a battle, for sure. Congrats on getting that pantry done! ;o)

Great job on the pantry! Those little critters are so smart - over winter we have a few show up. Our exterminator said if you change things around in the room (especially around the walls) it will drive them crazy and freak them out enough they will stop coming through. But man are they smart . . . and determined!

Wow! I found your blog because I was trying to find ways to secure our pantry. We seem to have a little mouse problem here at the house and they are accessing it from the attic. I came face to face with him at 2am the other morning and he had a piece of crossant in his mouth! LOL! Of course he is just cute as a button, but him and his friends cannot stay!! I thought I fixed the problem, but I found my muffin mix torn to shreds and he even got into the juice drinks last night!
Ugh! I am headed to the store to get some small bins and I guess its time for decon this weekend. *sigh* Thanks!
