Shoe Storage in the Mudroom

It isn’t the mountain ahead that wears you out;
it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.

I’ve been working on our laundry/mud room. We live on a farm and get a lot of use from our mud room. Shoes were thrown in baskets and boots stacked by the door, which is a recipe for lots of sweeping.

I ordered shoe bins and my 8- and 6-year-olds put them together. (They are getting good at building things; last month they put together a toy box for the dogs).

Here is our shoe system before–was not working for me!

Building the shoe bins (yes, homeschool credit given).

TaDa!

In the Laundry/mudroom. Perfect fit. Works for me!

See my last post for a shot of the whole laundry room (with my new cutie pie curtains)

Works for Me Wednesday is a “blog carnival” (explained here). This week WFMW is being hosted over at Don’t Try This At Home, while Shannon from Rocks in My Dryer is in Africa. Be sure to check out lots of great tips on Works for Me Wednesday.

    Great shoe rack! Aren’t shoes just the biggest mess sometimes. We have a shoe cubby/bench from IKEA in our front hallway. I love it but it’s definitely big enough for our family of 7. I keep other shoes/boots in the garage and the dress pairs up in the children’s individual room.

    Thanks for sharing!

    We changed from the basket to the bins also, just in the last 6 months! I like the bins better too it is just getting the children to take the extra 2 seconds to pick up the shoes they remove and place them in the bins!!

    I like your shoe system. It holds a lot of shoes in a small space! We have a low bookshelf that my hubby adapted (added extra shelves) for our shoes. It’s right by our back door. What I wouldn’t give for a mud room!

    That looks great, but I didn’t see that mentioned from what company you ordered the bin. I need something like this in my bedroom closet. So, want to share your source?

    Robin, we have a rack from IKEA by our front door (no mud room in my house). It has a “wrought iron” look. I keep my garden clogs there so I can slip them on when I run out to fill up the bird feeders or take out the trash. The kids keep their play shoes there.

    I also use one shelf on my IKEA bookcase in my bedroom for my shoes. Keeping them on the floor is a bad idea for me because of my back problems (I’ve had spinal fusion surgery.) Keeping them on a shelf on the bookcase at about waist height makes it easy for me to get them and put them away (no more hollering for the little ones to come find my shoes for me). My dh put in an extra shelf by setting a piece of old shelving on two small blocks of scrap wood so there are two full rows available. Just thought I’d share this for those readers who have back problems.

    Oh, and I love the quote. :-)

    Now that you have used the cubby system for your shoes for awhile how is it working?
