My brilliant daughter Victoria has a coupon system. She watches the sales papers, previews circulars online, combines with online coupons, then shops at Wal-mart where they accept competitor’s coupons.
This is an example of one shopping trip she paid 84 cents plus tax for $54 in products! Works for her.

- 2 Great Value On the Go Drink Mixes normally $1.75 on sale $1.50
Cost:
- Sub total before taxes and Coupons was $54.34
- Sub total before taxes and after coupons $.84
- Grand total after taxes $3.91
- 42 items sold for an average of $.02 per item before taxes!
- Pride in frugal my daughter - PRICELESS!
Vicky is teaching me to use the coupons online. I haven’t had the time to search and go to all the sites but this week I saved $15 on an $80 purchase at the grocery store (I’m a light weight).
Once I get the process down better I’ll post step by step instructions. If you don’t know which sites to go to, you waste a lot of time filling in forms for spammers. Consider this post a teaser.

Tackle clutter with canvas collapsible containers. You can find them at Amazon , Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Stacks and Stacks , Linens and Things, the Container Store, and several places online. They work for me, I use them in almost every room:

They come in pretty colors too like this Simply Shabby Chic™ Canvas Storage Bin in Rose fabric.

Here’s some fun storage boxes from West Elm (out of my price range but this gave me the idea to decorate my boxes. If I figure out how I’ll let you know).

Ikea has some unique boxes and great prices.

The Container Store has several options.

Ever think of using your leaf blower to clean the garage, barn, or patio? I “dusted” and “swept” our horse barn and metal storage building with a leaf blower. No more sweeping yucky cobwebs on my head!

We have an old wooden barn for our horses and large metal barn (half enclosed for storage and half open for hay, tractor, etc.)

Since no one has been in the barn for a month it was full of cobwebs. Our horses are in another county being trained and due home this week. I was cleaning and organizing the horse barn and hanging hooks for tack. I was using the broom to clean. Then I had a light bulb moment and grabbed the leaf blower.
It worked so well I used it to “dust”and “sweep” our storage barn. I have a lot of shelves full of boxes. The leaf blower “dusted” all the shelves, the top of my freezer, and swept the floor much faster than a broom. I also wind blasted cabinets where I keep the horse medication and brushes.
Then it was off to the patio to blow away all the dirt our two giant dogs drag in daily. It worked so well I’m keeping the leaf blower inside my laundry room to be nearby for a quick “sweep” of the patio daily.
So what do think. Shall I try blasting the legos in the family room? (JOKING)

Putting up a new mesh fence around our home works for me (at least for now) . We have 20 acres completely fenced, but because of the angry neighbor have to tighten the play area for the dogs and children.

Our neighbor doesn’t like the dogs barking. About a month ago he began shooting at our dogs. We have two Great Pyrenees. They don’t bark a lot but they do bark at squirrels, rabbits, badgers, deer, foxes and other things that run in our yard frequently. This is the drawing I made to mark off the area for the new fence:

When the shooting first started DH and I discussed it and decided the best course of action would be to talk. So I went over and gave the guy our phone number and said please call us if our dogs bother you. We never met him before this. He was civil and agreed. DH went over another day to touch base and make sure he was happy. We don’t want an angry man with a gun nearby. We began tying up the dogs near the house (out of the neighbor’s vision and range).
All was quiet until last weekend. My children and hubby were in the pool and both dogs were tied in our yard but barking because the neighbor had company in his pool. Out of the blue we heard screaming “Shut those *%$#@ dogs up and shots were fired. We sent the kids in the house.
Dh and I decided we needed to report him to the police. I went to get the phone and by the time I got got back the guy drove up on a motorcycle in our driveway screaming and yelling and waving his arms like a mad man to shut our dogs up because he can’t enjoy 5 minutes of quiet. I believe he was drunk. It was 11 am. He was so wild I called 911.
If he would have called as I had asked I would have taken the dogs in the house.
He was gone by the time police arrived. The dogs never barked once while the police were here (they bark at people who shoot at them). We had a trespass warning issued (so he can’t return). BUT the police said he could shoot and we couldn’t do anything about it. He told the police he was shooting into the ground.
Once the police left, he marched up and down the fence line with a rifle shooting every few minutes. We can only hope nothing sets him off again. What if a bullet goes into my window and shoots my children? I pray for safety daily.
Tightening the area my dogs and children play in works for me for now. I also have a tripod set up on my front porch to video tape any shots fired into my property (as a deterrent). Here are photos of the new fence and front gates.

We chose mesh because we will be getting goats soon.
Hard to believe anyone would risk hurting these guys:

Get a Gun?
By now you are wondering why we don’t get a gun. The only thing worse that an angry drunk with a gun would be a menopausal protective mother with a gun. It just wouldn’t be a good witness to shoot my neighbor. We will lay low and pray. God has a way of working these things out.

Today we drove our miniature horses and saddle broke Bubbles. We drove all three minis (individually rotating in two carts). The photos show us in one area but we had a ball in the fields, pastures, and woods (over 40 acres) for several hours. Works for me!
It was a great family day. We walked, trotted, galloped, and backed with each easily. David (8) and Christopher (7) both drove solo for the first time today.

Saddle Breaking Bubbles: Green on Green
Today was Bubbles first day with a saddle. Green on green. David (8) has only had a dozen riding lessons so I was apprehensive but it went beautifully. Bubbles was a perfect gentleman. Isn’t the western saddle too cute?

Bubbles is a Class B miniature, larger than our other minis and can handle David’s 60 lbs. Tobby and Comanche are much smaller and will only be used for driving (only very small children, that weigh 40 pounds or less should ride a class A mini).

Here is a great summer tip that may save a few tears at your house. My six-year-old needed a splinter removed but did not want me to remove it with tweezers or a needle. I came up with the brainstorm to try duct tape. The first two tries didn’t work. The third time I applied the tape and removed it and the splinter came out. Since then I read that Elmer’s glue helps remove splinters.

Yesterday I got a splinter. I tried the Elmer’s glue and it worked. Pour a drop of Elmer’s glue all over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the glue when you peel it off!
Trivia: Elmer the Bull (Elmer’s glue mascot) is Elsie the Cow’s (Borden’s mascot) husband. No kidding. There are no animal products in Elmer’s Glue.

More Uses for Elmer’s Glue
Unique uses for Elmer’s Glue from Associated Content.
Teach children to write their names by using a crayon to write the child’s name on a piece of paper, then trace over the letters using Elmer’s Glue-All. When the glue becomes dry, children can use their fingers to trace over the letters of their name. This makes it easier for them to understand the shapes of the letters.
Prevent broken shoelaces from fraying by simply dipping the end of the shoelace into the glue.
Seal plants by using Elmer’s Glue-All to seal all ends of pruned stems and branches. This protects against insects and excessive moisture loss.
Fix small holes in walls by filling the small nail holes with a drop of glue before painting the walls.
Tighten a screw hole by soaking a cotton ball in glue, stuffing the cotton ball into the hole, and letting it dry for 24 hours. Now, you’ll be able to use you a screwdriver to put a new screw in the hole.

This year I moved from a large home to a smaller home. I had some health issues so I wasn’t able to unpack. Now that I’m better I am back to unpacking. I have come to the conclusion “We have too much stuff!”
I now have the urge to purge. I’ve made several trips to Goodwill this week and I’m taking several large boxes there today –works for me.
I ran across this site The Story of Stuff. Please note I am not an environmentalist (we are dittoheads). But this site made some very interesting points about stuff we deal with daily.
Take a look at the 20-minute look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. It just may change the way you look at all the stuff you have and make you think twice before buying more you don’t need, and it may even give you the urge to purge.

A heart healthy oatmeal breakfast works for me. Children will warm up to oatmeal if you let them put on “Sundae” type toppings. I keep raisins and nuts (almonds or pecans) in our sugar bowl for oatmeal mornings.
We only use long cooking Quaker Oatmeal. It cooks quick and easy in the microwave in a Rubbermaid container. Here are more topping suggestions from Quaker:
- Raisins and brown sugar
- Low-fat granola and skim milk
- Currants and golden raisins
- Frozen raspberries and blueberries are my favorite!
- Raspberry nonfat yogurt and dried cranberries
- Apricot fruit spread and sliced almonds
- Sliced strawberries and plain nonfat yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon
- Maple flavored pancake syrup and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds
- Canned crushed pineapple, sliced bananas, and chopped nuts
- Strawberry nonfat yogurt and sliced kiwi
- Sliced bananas and vanilla nonfat yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon
- Reduced fat peanut butter and strawberry fruit spread
- Chopped dates, raisins, and walnuts
- Coarsely chopped canned peaches and ground ginger
- Diced dried apricots and honey
- Apple butter and raisins
- Blueberry fruit spread and vanilla or plain nonfat yogurt
- Orange marmalade and dried cranberries
- Coarsely chopped apple and brown sugar
- Reduced fat caramel topping and a sprinkle of chopped pecans
- Warm apple pie filling and skim milk
- Honey crunch flavor wheat germ and cinnamon
- Canned pear slices and maple flavor pancake syrup
- Skim milk and sliced peaches
- Mixed dried fruit
- Cherry preserves and wheat germ
- Diced cranberries and maple flavored pancake syrup
- Chunky natural applesauce
- Sliced bananas and mini-semisweet chocolate morsels
- Blueberries and sliced strawberries sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar
- Canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice
The soluble fiber found in oats and oat bran has been shown to help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol.

What a way to wake up - to the delicious smell of a comfort-food breakfast, Dutch Baby Oven Pancakes! This German pancake is a sweet breakfast dish similar to Yorkshire pudding derived from the German Apfelpfannkuchen. This breakfast works for me.
It’s quick, easy and made from things almost everyone has on hand. Makes a great family breakfast tradition. I’ve made it three times this week.
.
Ingredients
6 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
3/4 t. salt
3 T. sugar
2 T. Cinnamon
1 1/2 t. vanilla
Melt 1/3 cup butter in oven in a 9×13 pan; should be sizzling when you take it out. (If you use two small pans melt 2.5 Tablespoons of butter in each pan.)
Mix other ingredients in a blender or mixing bowl until very frothy. Pour batter into pan with melted butter. Bake at 400 F for 20-25 minutes.
Serve with any of these toppings: pancake syrup, fresh berries, applesauce, powdered sugar or lemon and orange slices. If fresh fruit isn’t available use thawed frozen peaches, raspberries, blueberries, etc.

Notes:
-
This is not a heart-healthy breakfast. To compensate, eat a small slice of pancake with a full cup of semi-thawed frozen berries. Yum!
-
The pancakes look strange after baking. They puff and curl up near the sides of the pan. This is normal.
-
If you have boys, call these Dutch Oven Pancakes and omit the word baby.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Cleaning Pads are the best cleaning product since soap and water. They do work like magic; I use them everywhere. I bought them for crayon marks on the wall. I quickly found them useful for removing other marks such as marks on the stairwell the movers left.
Magic erasers are white sponges that you get a bit damp and then scrub away at all of the annoying dirty marks. The pad easily and thoroughly breaks up tough dirt, lifting it away from surfaces. And, it does all this with just water alone. Pick them up from almost any grocery store for about $4 for a pack of two sponges. I get them when I find them on sale.
My favorite use is to clean the stove top. When we got this house the stainless stove top was a real mess (you aren’t suppose to use Mr Clean Eraser on glossy surfaces but my stove top gloss was long gone anyway).
I had spent a lot of time and elbow grease on this stove top. Then I had my strong 13-year-old son work on it for 15 minutes. It was almost impossible. Then I used the magic sponge and my 13-year-old son was astonished. “What did you do?” he cried. He was as frustrated as I was (wish I would have thought to take before and after photos). Now I just wipe with Mr. Clean; no need for elbow grease.
Here’s a cute commercial made for a Magic Eraser contest:

More Uses:
You Should Know
- Do not allow young children to handle these sponges. There was a scary image showing skin irritation on a child from a Scotch Brite Easy Eraser (similar product) on a blog, but there is dispute about whether it was from chemicals or the abrasive action of the product from being rubbed on the skin. Either way, keep away from the little guys.
- Do not use on highly glossy or satin finishes. Some surfaces can be stripped of their finish.
- Some reports say paint can become discolored or lighter if you scrub on it, so test this in an area where it doesn’t show first.
- The sponge will begin to disintegrate after the first use. It eventually crumbles away, literally rubbing away into nothingness.
The Coupon Junkie at the Homeschool Lounge has coupons for $1.00 off Magic Erasers.

Today is Backwards Day at Works-For-Me Wednesday. Instead of sharing a tip that has worked for me I get to ask you to help me solve a problem.
I am asking you to help me by enabling my addiction.
I am a book addict, a bibliophile. I’ll share this quote to express how I feel about my books.
Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity… we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance. –A. E. Newton (1863-1940)

I have thousands of books in boxes from our recent move. I recently shared in another post that our home in VA had a full basement with wall-to-wall bookshelves. I had many more bookshelf areas in my office, bedrooms, etc. It was great. They were sorted by subject and easy to find. Sigh…

Now here I am in TN with a lot of unpacked boxes full of books! I have space for shelves in my family room, office and living room but no funds at the moment (our home didn’t sell and we are paying two mortgage payments–HA–maybe that should be the problem I should ask you to help me solve!)
So what do you suggest for an inexpensive book storage solution? If you don’t have a solution comment anyway, tell me about your love of books.
The current cardboard box solution–not working. Can you imagine needing a phonics book? I need to be able to see the book titles. I look forward to your suggestions in the comments below.
If you are curious, you can peek at a list of some of the books in the boxes via LibraryThing:

I have to come clean–I am a pack rat. It hasn’t been a negative issue because I am an organized pack rat and I had enough room to store a lot of stuff.
Our home in VA had a full basement with wall to wall book shelves. Not pictured is a storage area with even more shelves, much deeper. I miss my shelves.

I purged a ton of stuff when we moved to TN because we were moving into a smaller home without a basement. All the “stuff” we don’t use often was stored in the barn. I need to purge more; thankfully, I don’t have to do it all at once. My plan is to spend one day a week purging.
Baby Clothes
Why is it so hard to give away baby clothes? Because I love to look at them and remember those wonderful, precious baby days. Then it came to me–why not remember with photos instead of boxes of clutter?
So here are some of the baby clothes I gave away. Works for me.

Books…hmmm not as easy. Taking photos won’t work. Any suggestions on how to purge a few hundred books (that I am sure I may need someday)?
Remember decluttering is like eating an elephant, one bite at a time. Stay tuned (or subscribe) for my next bite.

I’m using utilizing Works for Me Wednesday to start a new meme with a Prize! You have been tagged! What’s On Your Refrigerator?

On my fridge I have a dry erase board. It’s extremely handy to keep lists on: grocery list, Honey Do list, leftover list (with dates), messages, and appointments. Works for Me!

*****
What’s On Your Refrigerator? Meme
We all have refrigerators and most of us have personal items on the doors that reveal a little about our lives. The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone a little bit better. It will help your readers get to know you and help you to get to know other bloggers.
To make it more fun we are offering TWO bloggers a prize! Both winners will receive Clutter’s Last Stand.
- FIRST PRIZE: The first winner will be the person with the most interesting fridge.
- SECOND PRIZE: The second will be from a random drawing.
In Clutter’s Last Stand Don Aslett shows how clutter can begin to crowd not only our basements and attics, but also our relationships and our personal growth. He gives us the courage to sift, sort, and toss whatever is hazardous to our housekeeping and mental health. Through anecdotes, charts, cartoons, quizzes, and “bumper snickers,” Aslett humorously delves into the full range of junk areas (home, car, office, wardrobe…even friendships), pinpointing problem areas and offering practical ideas for getting rid of unnecessary clutter and cutting it off at its source.
This meme is a one-time posting but will bring visitors to your page and it will be fun to view others’ refrigerator doors. We will hold the drawing at the end of March.
The requirements are:
- Take a photo of the outside of your refrigerator.
- Post BOTH the image at the top of this page and the photo of your fridge on your blog.
- Link to this page telling others about the meme and contest. The code for the image is below.
- Add your link to Mr. Linky below.
- Tag five bloggers.
Use this code to add the fridge meme image (optional):

“It isn’t the mountain ahead that wears you out;
it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.”
I’ve been working on our laundry/mud room. We live on a farm and get a lot of use from our mud room. Shoes were thrown in baskets and boots stacked by the door, which is a recipe for lots of sweeping.
I ordered shoe bins and my 8- and 6-year-olds put them together. (They are getting good at building things; last month they put together a toy box for the dogs).
Here is our shoe system before–was not working for me!

16 Uses for Vinegar
Vinegar is incredibly cheap and will kill most bacteria, mold and germs. White vinegar neutralizes alkaline substances such as scale from hard water; it aids in dissolve gummy buildup and will remove dirt from wood surfaces. White distilled vinegar only costs about 69 cent for a large 32 ounce bottle. It works for me.
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix 50% water and 50% vinegar in a spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean sinks, counter tops, and other surfaces.
- Floor Cleaner: Add ½ cup distilled white vinegar in a gallon of water to clean hardwood or laminated floors. No need to rinse.
- Dish Cleaner: Mix 2 tablespoons white vinegar to liquid dish soap to help cut grease.
- Glass and Windows: Alcohol and white vinegar together make a quickly evaporating spray glass and mirror cleaner. Mix 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vinegar in a spray bottle. Or try the 50-50 all-purpose cleaner listed above.
- Refrigerator Cleaner: Clean the refrigerator by washing with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.
- Microwave Oven Cleaner: Set a solution of of 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave. Heat for 2 minutes on high. This will loosen splattered-on food so it wipes out easily.
- Show Curtain Cleaner: Get rid of mold from shower curtains by putting the shower curtain in the washing machine with a couple of towels; add 1 cup white vinegar to the detergent and wash.
- Faucet Cleaner: Put vinegar on a cloth and let it sit on the back of your kitchen or bathroom faucet to remove hard water stains.
- Coffee Maker Cleaner: Run a pot full of white vinegar through your drip coffee maker once a month to free it of mineral buildup . Rinse thoroughly with water when the cycle is finished.
- Shower Head Cleaner: Remove hard water deposits from your shower head by putting some white vinegar into a plastic baggy; duct tape it to the shower head and leave overnight. Brush the shower head to remove remaining deposits.
- Drain Cleaner: Keep drains clean by pouring in 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup vinegar; the mixture will foam as it cleans and deodorizes.
- Copper Cleaner: Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of distilled vinegar to make a paste to clean copper pot and pan bottoms.
- Garbage Disposal Cleaner: Make vinegar ice cubes and feed them down the disposal to clean and deodorize the disposal.
- Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Flush the toilet to allow the water level to go down, then pour pure vinegar in the toilet bowl to get rid of rings. Scrub down the bowl. Never mix vinegar with bleach. If you use bleach tablets do not use vinegar.
- Eyeglass Cleaner: Clean your glasses by wiping each lens with a drop of white vinegar.
- Gummed Label Remover: Saturate a cloth with hot vinegar and soak price labels to remove from glass, wood, and china. Give the vinegar time to soak in and after several minutes the label can be rubbed off.
