As an author, publisher, homeschool mother, and educator, I am thrilled to see the completion of NURTURING THE WRITE RELATIONSHIP.

I was excited as soon as I saw the words “A Family Writing Lifestyle.” Mary Ann shares valuable insights not only about writing itself, but about passing on the gift of written expression as a family tradition . What a gift to pass on to your children —the ability to capture insights, record memories, and relate perceptions and feelings.

The importance of teaching your children to write cannot be overstated. Skillful writers influence society. Christian writers have the privilege of encouraging, teaching, and strengthening others to have a closer relationship with God. The late Dr. Paul Bubna, former President of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, wrote,

“It may be true that a picture is worth a thousand words, but we must not miss the fact that writing words has a unique power all its own. Something powerful happens to the person who writes the words. It is one thing to think the thought, it is quite another to put it into words and see it on paper, or even a computer screen. That process opens a door of intimacy with one’s self that may be unmatched any other way.”

Our spiritual lives, our success in the work world, and our social networks all require the skill of writing. Writing skills are vital in today’s changing culture. Written communication declined during the age of the telephone but with the development of the computer people are writing again in the form of emails and blogging (on line journaling).

In my book, The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach, I encourage parents to teach their children to write to learn, also known as writing across the curriculum. Mary Ann embraces the same concept because she understands how writing helps to generate thoughts and to organize them logically and concisely. Writing can bring experiences, thoughts and opinions together. We write to express ideas, share stories, document history, imagine the future, express love, and dispense humor. When students tackle a subject, they can experiment with different techniques and strategies for writing. They discover new ideas, new ways of thinking and new methods of expressing themselves. When you teach your children to document their thoughts, feelings, and ideas on paper, you are equipping them with a gift they will use for a lifetime. Mary Ann demonstrates the practical steps to develop this type of writing into a family lifestyle.

This book will be a useful guide for any teacher and especially beneficial to homeschoolers. Most homeschoolers are fond of Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophies which emphasize real-life activities over academic exercises. Mary Ann agrees with Mason explaining how writing assignments that are viewed as academic exercises cause the child to lose the adventure of writing. Mason’s admirers will appreciate how Mary Ann’s unique approach is in agreement with Mason’s philosophy “… we believe that children’s’ minds are capable of digesting real knowledge, so we provide a rich, generous curriculum that exposes children to many interesting, living ideas and concept.” Mary Ann will show you how families working on individual and joint writing projects can motivate children to catch the excitement of relevant writing and come to understand that the art of writing is a powerful life tool.

I became eager to try out Mary Ann’s methods when I read how she taught her children to write using a real-life approach following the rules of an adult writing group. She posed as a mock publisher to lead her children through the writing process from query letters to contracts and finished publications, complete with book signings, and marketing techniques. What a great idea! About a dozen years ago when my grown children were young and learning to write they each created a book using Creating Books with Children by Valerie Bendt as a guide. Through the creation of their books they learned the writing, illustrating, editing processes but they never learned the query and submission processes . Here we are over a decade later writing again, with my youngest children, using Mary Ann’s ideas. I look forward to adding more finished writing products to my somewhat yellowed and faded but treasured papers of childhood thoughts, stories, inspiration, opinions, and beliefs to our
family files.

Although Mary Ann emphasizes forming a writing group, this is only one segment of her collection of ideas. This book contains much more. You will also learn how writing activities and rituals can be woven through the day, year, and even throughout life. Activities include ideas for family journaling, letter writing, Bible journaling, goal journaling, celebration journaling, apology letters, thank-you notes, and even writing to deal with loss and grief. This book is not about the educational nuts and bolts of writing, but is intended to celebrate and inspire writing in the home. Nurturing a Write Relationship will help you develop a family writing lifestyle and tradition.

Section I teaches you the importance of creating a safe place to write, allowing children to experiment with language. Children will become confident writers when they receive support and encouragement as they move through the writing process.

Section II details writing education principles. Mary Ann explains how to learn from great writers and how to be a writing mentor to your children. She also dispels several writing myths.

Section III explains the publishing process for a writing group from vision to revision to the completed process.

Section IV encourages you to develop a family writing lifestyle with family rituals, traditions, and celebrations and investigates a Biblical view of writing.

Section V includes many ideas for integrating writing into daily life and closes with the twelve writing principles of a family writing lifestyle.

Mary Ann’s book is full of several first-rate unique ideas to teach children to write that make writing a fun family experience. She provides an attractive combination of solid advice and clever insights on how to motivate and cultivate your children’s writing. I’m giving this book to each of my grown children to support them in their efforts to teach their children to write. I hope your family will spend time developing a family writing lifestyle. I promise it will be time well spent and the benefits are many.

If you’re looking for a book that will help you celebrate and inspire writing at home, then NURTURING THE WRITE RELATIONSHIP is a must have! In this creative piece, you won’t find formal instructions on the nuts and bolts of teaching writing, but instead you’ll find valuable insight on the hows and whys of writing!

BACK COVER

Wonderfully written by Mary Ann Froehlich, NURTURING THE WRITE RELATIONSHIP will draw you into the magical world of writing from the heart in the safe place we call home. From the very beginning, Froehlich gives the reader insight into her own personal world of writing and encourages readers to stop reading at any given point so that they can start writing. She also inspires writers to keep trying, as she cites examples of famous authors who didn’t experience instant success.

The book is based on a homophone (words that sound the same but are spelled in various ways):

WRITE—Understand the importance and develop the use of the written word

RITE—Understand the importance of cultivating rituals in family life

RIGHT— Understand the importance of communication in developing right relationships

Froehlich believes that the adventure of writing is lost when writing assignments are viewed as academic exercises. Instead, she introduces exercises for writers, such as journaling, letters, memoirs and more. Her “10 Principles for Effective Writing,” similar to the Suzuki method of teaching music skills, is concise and intuitive.

“If you only remember one statement from this book, let this be it: As a parent, you are your child’s most influential writing mentor. You are the example.” Froehlich expresses this concept about mentors throughout the book. With an approach that refuses to stereotype individuals’ methods of writing, Froehlich encourages writers to express their God-given ability to use the power of words to deal with everything in life, from grief to celebration!

In addition to giving creative advice on how to nurture writing within the home, Froehlich provides valuable resources for writing groups and teachers, including an excellent exercise for teachers to use in their classes with young writers that takes them through the entire publishing process from query letters to sales and marketing.

I’ve read this book and it is overflowing with excellent ideas for incorporating writing into every day life. One of my favorite parts is where she explains the book publishing process – what a great idea and motivator to get kids writing. The 10 educational principles of writing were new to me and very thought provoking, such as treating the young writer as a working author by giving him an audience. Isn’t that what we do with music students? We give them an arena to display their talents through a recital. Young writers need a similar showcase for their talents. I also love the lists of special days she provides(and there are tons) to celebrate through writing. Lots of scope for the imagination as Anne Shirley would say I highly recommend it.

This giant provides you with the methods, program, and resources for a course of study where students spend half the school day studying God’s Word and the other half studying God’s world (academics). Students study history chronologically and science in the order of the days of creation. This book will encourage, motivate you and instruct you, step by step, how to give your child a Bible focused, comprehensive education from preschool through high school; one that will train him or her to read, to study, to understand, to love to learn and most importantly to desire and seek true wisdom. This approach can be used for all grade levels.

Homeschool Magazine Review

Robin Sampson has put together a jewel of a package. This approach is written to appeal to many different learning methods using Charlotte Mason’s philosophy of learning, her own Bible first philosophy, and the biblical Hebraic method of education. The creative way of melding Charlotte Mason and the four basic learning styles has produced a approach that is truly a conduit to life-long learning. Robin gently leads us to this place of light yet highly encourages delight-directed learning at the same time. When you ignite a spark of interest in your child, lay aside the schedule/timetable and watch them fly! Children who are learning by choice will retain and enjoy so much more than those who are forced to study topics of no interest to them. There are comprehensive helps on making timeline books and portfolios, all with lots of illustrations and examples. Robin has obviously spent time in prayer and more prayer while she prepared these studies. Her writings are thoughtful, insightful and joyful and have been a labor of love from her whole family, I’m quite sure! Enjoy the four-steps—Excite, Examine, Expand, and Excel! You may never go back to any other way of learning.–Heidi Shaw, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

Cookbook Analogy

The simplest way to understand the Heart of Wisdom teaching approach is to compare it to a cookbook of recipes. I have worked on several recipes for over fifteen years; I have altered the ingredients, measurements and methods for these recipes over the years, and finally came up with nourishing and satisfying results. You can use my recipes as outlined, or adapt them to your family’s preferences.

This cookbook not only provides the recipes but also explains the background of the ingredients and cooking methods to help you make the best use of them. A recipe consists of combining a number of individual ingredients that may not ordinarily be thought of being put together, resulting in new dish. The Heart of Wisdom teaching approach is a combination of several different methods and resources. A cookbook and a teaching approach are both resources which include many kinds of information—from ingredients and sources, to proportions, methods of mixture and preparation, to particular kinds and uses of utensils.

The Main Recipe: Daily Study of God’s Word

The main recipe is an outline for making God’s Word the primary focus of the school day. The chief ingredient is the Bible. This recipe provides step-by-step methods (chronological readings divided into four steps) of mixture and preparation, to particular kinds and uses of utensils (Bible study tools), but does not provide exact measurements. The recipe is more like a grandmother’s rough-guide cooking instruction, “a little bit of this, a pinch of that.” The purpose of this recipe is to serve as an inspiration to the parent/teacher by presenting a variety of teaching ideas.

Side Dish Recipes: Unit Studies Based on God’s World

The other recipes include instructions on how to study God’s world through history, science, and life skills unit studies. The Bible is the most important ingredient for each of these recipes as well. Using these recipes you will be able to teach the following subjects: Bible, history, science, geography, composition, agriculture, religion, government, economics, and many more. The methods of mixture and preparation include learning styles and the four-step cycle of instruction, and delight-directed studying, while using utensils such as living books and the Internet.

This book includes recipes for creating your own unit studies, and also gives you the options of saving time by using a prepared unit study. The Heart of Wisdom teaching approach includes a four-year plan, which is to be repeated three times for a 12-year plan. If you decide to use the Heart of Wisdom teaching approach, you can utilize Heart of Wisdom unit studies or create your own unit studies using and/or adapting the recipes provided.

Planning Your Meals

If you use these recipes, you will need to add side dishes of your choice (math, phonics, foreign language, and other electives), based on your preferences, to create a complete meal. Each student has a wide diversity of strengths, weaknesses, ambitions, and goals. I provide enough direction so you know what’s essential to keep the recipes from failing, but I also give you enough room to let you discover for yourself the best balance of ingredients for your family.

As you learn about this approach, remember that your family cannot thrive on menus, recipes, or analyses of the food—you must spend the time preparing the dishes that will feed your family. When you do this, as long as you don’t leave out the main ingredient—the Bible—your outcome will be a success.

This book begins by preparing the teacher to lean on God for direction. The first chapter compares Israel’s Exodus from Egypt with homeschoolers leaving public school. The author explains, just as many Egypt beliefs remained in Israelites various public education beliefs remain in homeschoolers. Therefore, a reexamination of education choices is needed to bring us into the Promise Land. You are encouraged to let God take charge of your child’s education –by seeking and leaning on Him!

Of all the books I have read on homeschooling this book is a 5 star! plus.

I used Robin’s new book to introduce my son to the approach and also to help me to use the HOW Approach. I am writting my own lessons using the HOW approach as my son has hearing lost and I am deaf (oral/verbal), I also use hearing aids and have limited hearing.

You will not be disappointed with the book. The book has really help me in improving the way I teach and also what I teach and how not to worry about when my son learns something. Just because He doesn’t learn something in 2nd grade, doesn’t mean he can’t do it in 3rd grade. Most schools here in Indiana teach the state history (reguired) in the 4th grade. I don’t have to do it in his 4 grade year, but can do it now or when he is in 5 or 6 or 7 th grades. As longs as he does do it.

All I do is help him learn and let him learn at his pace and when he is ready for something, he does it with delight! Our homeschool experience is much better and most of all I am not burned out as I was last year. I am even experience much delight in our lessons and have learned a few things myself.

It’s here! It’s here! Thank you Homeschool- Books and Robin! I’ve only gotten through the 8th chapter of the Ebook so far, but it’s the best book I’ve read so far, other than the Scriptures, of course.

I am so very excited to get this book! I’ve had this continual feeling that there just wasn’t enough focus on the word or that it was just tacked on for a few minutes each morning. This book will help me accomplish the goal of Christ being the central focus of all we do in our homeschool and life. This is the first “how-to” that I will be able to pass to skeptical relatives and say, “Here is my philosphy on education”. Thank you, Robin, for putting into words what I have needed for so long!

I enjoyed reading the sample pages, but I am so looking forward to the book. I cannot wait for some encouragement–which I know I will find in this book. I have recently been thinkng that homeschooling is getting too tough. I am reminded by thinking of Moses that God called me to homeschool–not just until it got tough, but until he leads me down another path.

Second that — love the samples!
Actually, I’m very glad that more of the wisdom you have to share will soon be available. It isn’t easy to leave Egypt and go boldly into the Promised Land, but that is what the Lord would have for us, after all, what He told Joshua applies to us as well, “Be strong and of good courage … for I am with you!” Your work helps me to remember that truth.

Thank you for your encouraging sample pages. It’s been really hard homeschooling my 5 children and I know the Lord has put it on my heart two years ago to do this and I haven’t been doing well with this. I have been using textbooks and the kids think its too hard and boring and dont want to do it. My dad gave me this book called”Things we wish we’d known” and I had it since Dec. but just read it a month ago.I I read your article in it and I loved it! I looked up your website on heart of wisdom and teared up because this is what I have been looking for.Praise the Lord! Now this is my answered prayer. This is perfect for all my children to enjoy and have fun.

EVERY homeschool parent should read this book. I have been reading this very slowly. There is so much information my Bible is right next to me when I read this book. I was even reading some of it to my children. I know I will be reading this a second time. I would love for my children to read parts of it.

This book will encourage anyone looking into homeschooling or people who have been homeschooling and need some encouragement. Don’t miss this book. It was well worth the wait. I have been reading this after my morning Bible reading before the children wake up. By doing this it is allowing me to stay focused on the Lord and giving me the motorvation I need to teach and serve the Lord.

This is the BEST book I have read in my 15 years of homeschooling. This book takes a hard (but is a good way) look at the way we need to teach our children. That we need to train them for the LORD not train them for the WORLD.

Thank you, this book came at just the right time in my homeschooling jouney. May God richly bless you and your family.

Love the sample pages! Thank you, thank you for the much needed inspiration. I am in tears of relief that someone out there understands and supports God’s word in teaching. I have renewed hope for the coming years. My little girl is four, so will begin ‘education’ soon. I know now that God is answering my prayers for direction in our education efforts. I just purchased this book at a homeschool convention at the beginning of June. It is exactly the tool we need for our family right now!

Thanks so much for all you do to help each family find peace while learning together.

This book is a must-read for Christian homeschool teachers. With dedicated prayer and insight, Robin Sampson has created a new approach to teaching that filters every subject through the Bible. The framework she provides at first seems complex, but after immersing yourself in it for a few days it becomes very clear and logical. I am so excited about this new school year and I am certain I will learn as much as my kids. That’s one of the best things about this approach. It is applicable to you as well as to your students. It allows lots of room for creativity with options for scrapbooking, drawing, writing and anything else that can be documented for a portfolio. Even instituting a portion of the suggestions made in this book will revitalize your Christian homeschool and alleviate burnout for you, the teacher.

If I had to choose only one homeschooling book, HOWTA would be the one! Amazing, stupendous work by Robin Sampson! I can’t believe I’m so blessed to have found what I will use for the rest of my homeschool years this early on! I was homeschooled growing up, and worked in a homeschool bookstore. I’ve seen it all, and THIS is what it’s all about. The resource section alone is worth its weight in gold. I can’t possibly recommend it highly enough!!!

I say WOW after reading HOW. I feel blessed to have stumbled across this book because for me it has been a prayer answered. I found it while looking for information on how to apply the Charlotte Mason teaching method.
I withdrew my son from school and started home-schooling him with little warning and no planning. Although I knew this was the right decision it left me in a difficult possition. I either had time to reaserch how and what to teach him or to teach him but not both at the same time.
The HOWTA has given me a frame on which to mount the canvas of our home-schooling. There are many great points about this method but there are two in particular which I love. The first is that is has such a sound biblical base – which is something which is so important to both myself and my son. This really shows through in all subjects. The other really wonderful thing is that I am inclined to go for a delight driven approach but sometimes lack confidence in this as it has no structure and is very difficult to plan round or collect resources for in advance. The HOWTA has given me the confidence that I lacked because it shows how to follow the delight driven path while being within a structure. And because it is a biblical structure I feel comfortable and secure using it. I have since purchased other items by Robin Sampson and was not disappointed and I plan to buy more as our home-school journey progresses.

WOW! what a relief… THE SOLUTION is here.
I am so relieved to have found this book. The most important key to a childs growth and success in this world is how to obtain and walk in wisdom. This book clearly defines what true wisdom is and where to find it as well as how to teach it. Robin Sampson has done and incredible job in answering all of a mom’s concerns about education today. I am overjoyed to have this book as a tool to guide me as I help my children discover their hearts of wisdom. Every parent should read this book.

Author: Kimberly A. Depaolo
In her book, rich with biblical and historical references, Robin Sampson makes a solid case for putting God first in home education curriculum. Quite unlike many other books I’ve read, Mrs. Sampson consistently encourages her readers to have God direct their home education efforts not the state, friends, family, etc. After reading this book, I’ve lost those nasty “first time” home education jitters and feel confirmed in my calling to educate my child with a focus on training her in the way GOD would have her go.

This is the second book I’ve purchased from Heart of Wisdom and I highly recommend this author. The first was the equally excellent “What your child needs to know when…” With God as our “principal”, I am confident that we are in good hands!

WOW! I am sooo excited about using HOW this year. At the end of spring I began praying about what the Lrod would have me use for curr. this year. I was throughly researching the Veritas Press and HOW; after reading all I could about veritas and the HOW book, I have a firm conviction that the Lord wants us to use the HOW for our family from now on! I have throughly enjoyed all the knowledge and wisdom that I have gleened from reading Sections 1 and 2 about rethinking christian education. It has really been a blessing to be challenged to think about the methods by which we educate our children. I truly desire to pull away from the greek and secular worlviews of teaching and to embrace a more Hebriatic way of educating. There is so much to learn and I know that Robin Sampson has worked very hard to create such a through rescource; but I am very anxious to begin learning with my children all the things that I was not taught in my education; wisdom!!!!!!! A must read for any homeschool parent!!!!!!!!!

While reading this book I kept telling myself, “This is what I wanted/hoped for when I started Homeschooling!”. I am so glad I have found it now. I love the 4 Mat system and Robin’s use of it in her unit studies. She goes into detail of how you can use her unit studies, make your own, or implement somone else’s. It fits everyones needs who wants a biblical based education for their children. Even if you don’t want a biblical based education it goes in depth of how to create a unit study of an area where your child shows delight (good example of a horse study). If you are new to homeschooling it helps support your decision and gives resources for you to use that have taken veteran homeschoolers years to discover. It gives you the best of the best!

This book is a gem! After homeschooling for six years I was needing a new focus. HOW is it! Unlike many books on the subject this is invaluable to both the new and the seasoned homeschool family. It energized us and gave the Biblical focus that we were searching for all along. Robin’s writing style helps explain her approach to unit studies as well as the Hebraic method in a conversational way. It makes you feel like your having tea with a friend! Her reasoning is solid and her explanations clear. This is a must read for those looking at unit studies for the first time, those needing a jolt of the Spirit in their lessons, or those just wanting a change. It’s definitely at DELIGHT!

Which resources? books, Internet sites? TV shows? videos? audios?

You should choose resources based on your family’s interests. Choosing resources is as individual as choosing your home decor—it will vary from family to family depending on needs, interests, and budget.

Many Heart of Wisdom unit study lessons contain enough resource material and/or Internet links in themselves that further research is not required. However, we give several recommendations for those who desire to branch out and learn more.

We provide you with hundreds of resources (and a select number of Key Resources ) to choose from. Don’t think of this choice as overwhelming—think of it as an opportunity to find out where your students’ interests (delights) lie.
Building a home library saves a tremendous amount of time and effort.

A well-equipped home library to a homeschooler is like a well-equipped kitchen to a cook. How much time and effort is saved by having the right ingredients and not having to substitute! (You can explain this to your husband by comparing it with having the right tool for a job in his toolbox.)

What types of resources do you recommend?

Heart of Wisdom unit studies include so many links to free information on the Internet that you could actually use the units without purchasing any additional resources. However, students need to read (and feel and smell) real books! We recommend dozens of resources for each unit, but please understand that you are NEVER expected to use ALL the resources recommended.

Giving your student the opportunity to do research
in a variety of ways also increases his interest!

Books -We recommend several popular homeschool resources to help you build a good home library and so you can utilize the books you already have. These books are so popular with homeschoolers that you will have a good chance of finding one or more of them at your local library or homeschool group. We also suggest a variety of books because books sometimes go out of print.

Internet Sites – We recommend several different Internet sources because Internet sites move or go off line all the time, and by listing several of them, you have better chance of finding the information you need. There is an enormous amount of great free stuff on the Internet you can accessvideo clips, interactive sites, audio clips, great illustrated sites, lessons from schools and colleges, dozens of encyclopedias, etc.

Videos and Television Shows - We recommend several TV programs and videos; we give you a description of the show or video so you may be able to find it at your library, or you can use the link provided to go to the web site to find out air times in your area. We include links to The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Health, Travel Channel, Moody, Discovery School and The Discovery Store, just to name a few. If you have Tivo you can search for shows and record them for viewing at a later date.

Will we use the resources for a few weeks, or several years?

The resources we recommend progress from general to specific to detailed. Some will overlap. In our unit studies these books are marked with symbols (heart, star, diamond) as listed below.

Recommended for the four-year plan (broad-based)

Recommended for the year (narrower)

Recommended for one unit (specific)

Recommended for one lesson (detailed)

The books below are optional, but make great additions to a homeschool library.

Please understand that we recommend some books because many homeschoolers already have them in their home library. In each unit, we give you the page numbers or chapters to read from a variety of books you may already have so you can utilize the information you have on hand.

Bible Resources

The Bible study tools ar eaids you’ll refer to over and over for many years. We offer a Bible Study Package.
History Resources

A. History books recommended for the four-year plan: Example: Kingfisher Encyclopedia of the World contains snips of information on historical events from the beginning of time to 1993. It’s a general overview that you can use for several years. It is a very handy book to have on the shelf to look up historical events or persons. The Complete Book of When and Where in the Bible includes information about 1,001 events in BIble and Christian history and their significance. This book is a comprehensive timeline you’ll refer to over and over for many years.

B. History books recommended for the year: Ancient History: Adam to Messiah (history year one) covers Creation to the time of Christ. Nelson’s Illustrated Encyclopedia includes events from religion, society, and everyday life in each civilization. Our Father Abraham focuses on the Hebrew and Christian background and significance of each time period. Both are highly recommended because they give more information than the above book.

C. History books recommended for one unit (or several lessons): Note that most history reference books fall into two types: daily life or chronological events. Example: A unit in Ancient History: Adam to Messiah is “Ancient Egypt.” Eyewitness: Ancient Egypt focuses on daily life in ancient Egypt. History Pockets, Ancient Egypt is designed for elementary students, making history come alive as students make interactive projectse. The projects are stored in labeled construction paper pockets with decorative covers. With History Pockets, students are engaged in discovery while creating portfolios for assessment and display. Mara, Daughter of the Nile is a novel. Historical literature paints for us a picture of a time and place, of customs and society and manners.

D. History resources recommended for one lesson:
Books or videos recommended for one lesson are to be used when your student finds delight in a lesson and wants to go into more depth. Use their interest to promote a love of learning. Example: One lesson in the Ancient Israel unit is “The Tabernacle.” If you or your student or family wants to learn more, we recommend The Tabernacle: Shadows of the Messiah or Made According to Pattern.

Science Resources

A. Science books recommended for the four-year plan: Example: The Usborne Internet-linked Science Encyclopedia and Dorling Kindersley’s Google e.Encyclopedia: Science both contain information of science discoveries, terms, explanations, etc. Either would be an excellent science resource you would use for many years. Heart of Wisdom science unit studies tell you what pages to read in each lesson but these are books your children will browse without your prompting.

B. Heart of Wisdom science unit studies for year one focus on physical science. The New Way Things Work and The Handy Physics Answer Book can be used in most of the energy, light, matter, motion and electricity lessons IF they are books you already have on hand; if not, several other books are recommended. Most homeschoolers own The New Way Things Work so we included the page numbers for this book and other popular homeschool books in each lesson. These books give more information than the book listed above but not as much as the books listed below.

C. Science books recommended for one unit (or several lessons): Example: DK’s Eyewitness Energy is highly recommended to have for the Energy unit (unit in “Creation Reveals God” in Science One).

D. Science resources recommended for one lesson: Books or videos recommended for one lesson are to be used when your student delights in a specific topic. Use their interest to promote a love of learning. Example: A lesson in the Light unit is “Thomas Edison’s Light Bulb.” If you or your student or family wants to learn more, we recommend Thomas A. Edison, Young Inventor or The Light Bulb and How It Changed the World.A large part of the appeal of unit studies is in its flexibility when choosing resources; this means that each family will need to consider their homeschool budget, time available, the number of children that will be using this program, and their personal interests.

Which resources are required?

The only required resources are a Bible and a writing handbook. Think of the Bible as your main textbook and the Heart of Wisdom unit study as your guide. All other resources are optional. We recommend The Narrated Bible and Writers Inc: A Student Handbook for Writing and Learning.

The Narrated Bible is arranged chronologically. We recommend The Narrated Bible for several reasons:

The chronological arrangement helps students see how various Scriptures fit with each other and with their historical settings.

The modern English used is familiar and easy to understand. It is amazingly easy to read through several books of the Bible in one sitting with this story format.

Because it is written in everyday English, the text can be used for dictation and copying lessons, (to teach handwriting, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation).

The layout of the book is ideal for teaching students how to outline. Each section includes excellent titles and subtitles, which give a concise overview of the theme.

Helpful background information (narrative commentary) is written to integrate with most Scriptures in such a way that it is part of an unfolding story (in a separate and distinct typeface and color).

Throughout the presentation of Scripture, chapter and verse designations are placed in the margin for easy reference.

Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon are divided thematically. Topic examples include: Discipline, Temper, Patience, Greed, Flattery, Controlled Speech, etc.

Your student will be referring to this book in almost every lesson. We do not refer to page numbers in this book because it is frequently revised. Writing, reading, and additional study skills are combined in this comprehensive writing manual. The fundamental principles of writing are explained throughout for quick reference. The process of organizing, researching, and writing a paper is laid out in easy-to-understand language.

The book outlines strategies for writing with computers, including instruction in writing multimedia reports and publishing online. Also included is information on thinking and learning skills, such as viewing, note taking, and test-taking skills and more. Paperback (August 1995) Write Source; ISBN: 0669388130.
What do I need to Get Started?
