Columbus Day Project & Free Clipart

It took about 45 minutes for my boys and I to make this digital scrapbook page. After reading the book we brainstormed a list of facts to record. We began with a scrapbook template (starting with a template says hours!) and the boys chose the kits and decided which papers went where.

Scrapbooking to Learn Steps

We read a book about Columbus from our home library.
We watched a few Youtube videos.
We brainstormed a list of facts to record (browsing book for review).
I let the boys browse my scrapbook stash. They picked this Mega Masculine Kit (I would have chosen a blue kit for the ocean, but it’s important they get to choose).
I found the free Columbus embellishments listed below (quick Google search).
I chose the template is by Nettio Designs. (Did I mention templates save hours? I have a huge template stash and use them over and over. Search free scrapbook template at Google to get your stash started.)
We created the scrapbook page (boys chose which papers went where learning Photoshop as we worked.

We used the same approach to make the Johnny Appleseed and apples pages here.

The process from book to videos to scrapbook page took about a total of 90 minutes. But the scrapbook page took about 45 minutes. Next week we will go over the page for review.

Utilizing YouTube

YouTube has a TON of videos on Columbus. Here are just a few. BTW, We have limited bandwidth and can;t watch videos on the computer, so we use iPhone connection (small but it works).

This so much faster than lapbooking (but we still lapbook) and the end product it pretty impressing.

What Classics do Your Recommend? (Free Download)

The Heart of Wisdom approach recommends immersing your children in living books or classical literature. We believe you should read the greatest classic—the Bible—the only real, literal, living book, daily, and attempt to read several classics throughout the year.

What is a Classic?

What is a classic book? The answer depends on who you ask. A classic to a Christian can be quite different from the world’s definition. In a broad sense, the term classic is applied to anything accepted either as a model of excellence or as a work of enduring cultural relevance and value. The differences between Heart of Wisdom’s classical list and the classics included in classical secular education are the book lists.

Classics According to Classical Education

Encarta defines classical education as the study of Greek and Roman literature, one of the oldest forms of education known. In classical education, a classic is any ancient Greek or Roman literary work of the first or highest quality.

The modern classical approach focuses on the Great Books of the Western World (GBBWW). Virtually every book in this collection is required reading in a liberal arts curriculum, and includes works of art, science, philosophy, poetry, prose and history from the time of the Greeks until the early 20th century. Plato, Herodotus, Virgil, and Aristotle are some of the main authors. This list was developed by Mortimer J. Adler and Britannica Editors. They believed these books were the core of Western learning and culture. Most of the books on this list were written by non-Christians, men like Aeschylus, Apollonius, Aquinas, Dewey, Euclid, Euripides, Freud, Hippocrates, Homer, Marx, Plato, Ptolemy, Muhammad (the Quran or Koran), Thoreau, etc.

Classics According to Heart of Wisdom

Heart of Wisdom’s suggested books lists include models of excellence or works of enduring cultural relevance and value, and do not include mythology nor books by the ancient Greek philosophers.

How to Use the Character Traits Checklist

Planned Lessons Using the 4-Step Method

Step 1. Introduction:

Today we’ll be doing a character study on being appreciative. Can you think of some examples of appreciation? Discuss and interact.

Step 2. Learn about the trait:

Read the definition: Expressing, in words, actions, and thoughts, value to the actions of God and others the ways they have served me. Read the Bible verse: God’s Word says, “In every thing give
thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Step 3. Do something with what was learned:

Students can copy or dictate the Bible verse and/or the definition (younger children can narrate the meaning orally).

Or students can write or narrate a story about the character trait.

Step 4. Share with another:

The purpose is to show appreciation sometime today. Share how you showed appreciation with
your parents.

Watch for a Teachable Moment

Wait for a child to show a positive or negative character trait.

Example: Susie won’t share her toy with her younger brother. Take Susie into your lap and discuss generosity. Read the definition and Bible verse listed under “generous.” Ask Susie how
she can show generosity.

Reinforce positive behavior by pointing out positive character.

Example: Johnny listens attentively to a lesson. Read the definition and Bible verse listed under “attentive.” Congratulate Johnny for being attentive.

Free Printable Bible Memory Match Game

We are working on Children’s Bible Drill at our church. I made these matching cards for the first nine Bible verses.

This is a free printable 6 page document (1 page instructions 5 pages of cards) you can print from your computer. I printed them out on card stock and laminated them for durability before cutting out.

There are two sets of cards- one with images and one without. Play with either or mix them up.

Become a better teacher through the use of digital technologies. There are many web sites where you can watch streaming videos on your computer. Video streaming brings courses alive to online learners, by allowing you to use your visual and auditory senses to learn interesting and complex material.

We use streaming videos in our homeschool every day to enhance lessons. My boys process information quicker and have a stronger grasp on the subject matter when I reenforce the lesson with a video. They are motivated and engaged when they have this option.

Searching Video Directories

Example: How Stuff Works. I did a quick random search on “Simple Machines” at How Stuff works and got 43 science videos. Try it -clcik the search videos button.

At Discovery Channel, you can search their video directory including Turboo, Planet Green, The Learning Channel to find thousands of super educational videos. I did a quick random search on “Simple Machines” and got 271 videos. Many were not science related. You have to narrow the search by using the Discovery or Learning Channel buttons on the side bar.

Writing to Learn & Writers Inc

Packed with everything you need in a writing handbook. Writing, reading, and additional study skills are combined in the best comprehensive writing manuals ever! The fundamental principals of writing are explained throughout for quick reference. Some of the topics covered are: writing paragraphs, poetry , punctuation, spelling, and more with sections on logic, book review, computer terms, maps, and even the U.S. Constitution.

This book is recommended in every Heart of Wisdom Unit Study. Throughout the lessons you are asked to correct students spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, subject/verb agreement, consistent verb tense, and word usage in all writing by marking the error with a number that corresponds with a rule from Writers INC. The student refers to the rule in the book and corrects his paper and turns it back in.

It is important to read through “The Writing Process” in Writers INC with your student. It is important for your student to understand the writing process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Publishing. Explain to your student that you will accept his or her writing in different stages. Requiring all work to be “published” can discourage writing.

Throughout the lessons your student will be asked to write summaries, paraphrases, letters, essays, etc. Much of the time you can accept rough drafts, but occasionally (especially adding work to the portfolio) your student needs to go through the entire process.

Through the writing assignments students will learn:

Writing Skills: context, form, mechanics, editing and revision
Spelling Skills: create a personal spelling dictionary
Increase Vocabulary create a personal vocabulary notebook
Handwriting Skills: practice writing Bible verses
Critical Thinking Skills: manage and use information to solve problems, interrelate knowledge, effectively communicate learning outcomes.
Character development through assignment completion: attentiveness, commitment, confidence, decisiveness, efficiency, faithfulness, perseverance, promptness, responsibility, and self-control
more writing and revising strategies based on the six traits of effective writing;
expanded guidelines for writing expository and persuasive essays;
additional information on writing research papers including writing MLA thesis statements, using APA research guidelines, searching for informationâ€”in the library and on the Internet, and citing electronic sources;
updated strategies for writing with computers including writing multimedia reports and publishing on-line;
more information on thinking and learning skills including viewing, note taking, and test-taking skills.

Give your students an invaluable resource they’ll turn to again and again school and beyond.

The mechanics of writing should be taught as part of the overall process of writing .Gaining control of the mechanics of writin–punctuation, spelling, and correct usage– clearly important to becoming an effective writer. Research has shown that grammar lessons taught without making connections to the context of authentic writing do not typically help students better write or edit their own work (Hillocks, 1986;Weaver, 1997).

Many experts on writing and cognition emphasize the importance of learning these conventions in the context of the studentsâ€™ own writing (e.g., Atwell,1987; Calkins, 1994; Graves, 1983; Spandel, 2001; Weaver, 1997). Routman (2000)points out, â€œWriters learn to control conventions best â€˜at the point of need,â€™ that is, in the context of real writing.â€ This is not to say that mechanics, usage, and grammar should not be introduced in lessons directed by the teacher. What is necessary is that once introduced, these skills are made meaningful only by practice in the context of students– own writing. In addition, these skills should be reinforced as appropriate with mini-lessons.

It is a way for them to learn to express their thoughts and feelings in a variety of ways including journals, reports, poetry and story writing .

When I looked at this handbook for the first time, I was hooked! I knew I had found a tool that was child-friendly and illustrated the traits all good writers possess .

I begin each year by teaching the six-traits of effective writing, introducing my students to journal writing and portfolio management. We then spend time building paragraphs and writing short essays while simultaneously learning the steps in the writing process. Then we branch out across the curriculum incorporating our writing s kills in every aspect of our day…

The illustrations help present the important information in a fun and exciting way. The format breaks the writing process into simple steps and more importantly, it gives real-life examples (samples) of writing done by other kids. The checklists and proofreading guides are invaluable. It also teaches students how to use a dictionary, a thesaurus, how to become a better speller,punctuation skills, test-taking strategies as well as how to work in cooperative groups.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Telling a child to clean a room is overwhelming. These check lists are broken down into easy doable one to three minute chores. Assign a child a room or a few steps. Hang the kids core chart in the appropriate room.

Explain to your children if you complete the list every day each can be done in about 15 minutes!

Click on list to get 8.5 x11 sheet for printing. Laminate list. Use dry erase markers to check off or assign chores. (If you don’t have a laminate consider getting one, we use ours all the time).

A 15 Minute Cleanup time is a great way to stay ahead of clutter. To really keep a home clean you should add weekly to do lists too (clean out fridge, clean under beds, closets, etc).
