Laser Light

  1. Laser Light: My Path to Discovery -Students explore the autobiography genre through the story, “From Death Rays to Laser Light: My Path to Discovery.” They compare the terms biography and autobiography, review vocabulary terms, and discuss what they know about lasers. Next, they read the story and write a journal entry about what they enjoy doing and a possible job for their future. 8 pg PDF. Grades 6-8.
  2. Lasers – The students will observe the “speckled” pattern produced by a He-Ne laser projected upon a wall or screen. By moving the head from side to side, the students will notice that the speckled pattern appears to move either in concert with their motion (in the same direction) or opposite their motion. This apparent movement correlates to the observer’s visual acuity (nearsightedness/farsightedness). This phenomenon can be used as a basis to collect data either locally or via the Internet.Grades -12.
  3. Laser Saving Sight -Students learn that problems are solved, or new technology discovered, by scientists using information from disciplines other than their own; to appreciate the fact that discoveries today could not be made without the discoveries that came before.
  4. emon Light  – Students engage in a lesson which model different types of light refraction. They perform an experiment which uses lasers, jello and wax paper to illustrate how light refracts.
  5. Visible Light and Lasers – Gives information on the discovery of lasers, their production, and their uses.
  6. Lasers - Outline and lessons on lasers from the University of Aberdeen
  7. Experiments with Lasers - Experiment to give an understanding of some of the fundamental characteristics of light as produced by a laser, and to gain familiarity with principles of communication with light.

Laser Videos

  1. Laser Light – This video explores the uses of lasers. In lasers, an electric current stimulates the emission of photons. Lasers emit light of only one frequency, light travels in the same direction and light waves are in-phase.
  2. Using Lasers - In a helium-neon laser, an excited helium atom collides with a neon atom in the ground state, transferring energy.
  3. From Lenses to Lasers – This program explores waves and their properties; it explains that light is the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which consists of a variety of waves and rays. The video also examines the use of concave and convex lenses and related concepts.
  4. Light, Lenses, Lasers: Ultraviolet – This segment describes the location of ultraviolet rays in the electromagnetic spectrum. This clip also explores the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays and the uses of ultraviolet rays in medicine.
  5. Physics:  Creating a Laser - Each orbit of the hydrogen atom has a quantized value for energy and radius, so the energy absorbed or emitted by an electron and the levels it moves between can be calculated.
  6. Physics: Exploring Laser Light – Only certain electron orbits are permitted. An electron does not radiate energy continuously. An electron emits or absorbs a photon only when it moves from one orbit to another.
